French Antique MISTLETOE Solid SILVER Chatelaine Rattle Pendant Ornament Nouveau

Thanks for stopping by my shop! The majority of these I acquired in France. Most all are 100 years old or more so they are great conversation pieces to use or wear, and make lovely collectibles as well as unique gifts.

Offering here this French antique Art Nouveau solid silver mistletoe chatelaine scalloped shaped rattle. It has a loop to hang from a chatelaine set or for use as a pendant or ornament. Chain in photos is not included.

While we now commonly associate it with the holidays, in the past mistletoe was used year round as a symbol and design motif representing many other things besides Christmas. In the Middle Ages in France, mistletoe was cut and offered to wish the recipient prosperity and long life.

Its evergreen leaves symbolized'life that does not die'. In addition to long life, it was also associated with fertility, health and even a good harvest in the months to come. In the late 1800s / early 1900s in France, it became a very popular Art Nouveau motif representing good luck and also peace.

And of course in Victorian times and still today we see it as a representation of love, friendship and romance. It is 1 1/2 inches tall to the top of the loop by 1 1/4 wide.

French boar's head hallmark strike on the loop but it has worn. Tested and guaranteed solid silver. Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned with age to them so they are in estate condition. The piece is a bit flat, I think it might have bowed out more originally to rattle better but still would wear nicely.

It has a bit of stubborn tarnish but a nice antique patina. Makes a tinny rattle sound with the ball inside sometimes getting stuck from the flat shape.

A few shallow impressions, some curves or a ripple here or there. Surface wear and scratches from use and polish. But Please note that due to age this is not in mint condition.
